Located on the tower southern slopes
of the Gargano, Manfredonia faces the Adriatic Sea at the center of the Gulf of
Manfredonia. Construction began in 1256 on the wishes of King Manfred
and the
town rose around a Swabian castle in a chess-board type form. After being
devastated by the Turks in 1620, the town suffered for many centuries and only
really began to recover after the Second World War when drainage of the
surrounding land I fid to a rapid growth in the population and of construction
work. Manfredonia is a modern town with chemical and mechanical industries. It
is tlierefore quite different from the other towns of the Gargano. Only a fey;
ancient monuments have survived: the Castello, founded hy Marred and completed
by Charles I ofAnjou,whir.h houxes the "Permanent exhibition of Ike Daun '. 'funeral
stands"; the San Domenico church mth the original gothic front door and the
ruins of the Maddalena chapel.
On
the outskirts of the town there is the Grotta Scaloria, an
important
paleonthologic observatory where, alongside paleolithic treasures, bone
fragments of tiventy species of animals including the remains of chamois, elks,
deer, lynx and urus, and ancient primitive were also found.
