The town is located at a height of 796 meters, on the slopes of the southern, side of the Garganofrom where it dominates the Adriatic coast if the Gul of Manfredonia. Built in the V century around the famous San Miehele Arcangelo shrine, the old town still has a typically Medieval form with family houses butit along steep, winding streets. In the past the town was long contended by Byzantines, Lombards, Saracens Normans until it passed under the rule of'the Angevms and then the Aragonese. After being the fief of Giorgio Castriota, called Scanderbeg, Fernandaz de Cordoba and Consalvo Ferrante. the town was bought by the Grimaldi family from Genoa  1552 to 1798. Of the town's many monuments, the mostfamous is without doubt the shrine o/Sari Michele Arncangelo. Originally built in Pre-romanic style in the lower part of the grotto whwe the Archangel is said to have miraculously appeared, it was subsequently constructed in basilica  style between the VII and VIII centuries. The structure of this second church remained untouched until the XIII century when, the Angevins radically transformed it. Another monument worth mentioning is the high, four-sided mausoieujn ijicorrectly known as the Tomba di Rotari . Many theories have been put forward regarding its original use but it was most probably a baptistry. There are the adjacent churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria,' the church of San Francesco where Queen Giovanna is buried; the Castello buill by the Normans and then   restored and extended by the Aragons. The  "Museum of Arts and popular traditions" where the folklore of the Gargano promontory is well documented is also worth mentioning. From Monte Sant'Angelo along a, panoramic road with breathtaking views of the Gulf of Manfredonia and the Tavoliere it is possible to visit the ruins of the ancient abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano (XII century), an important center for the propagation of Benedictine culture in southern Italy.
