Archaeological Museums in the Province of Taranto
The Gold of Taranto
Taranto was one of the most important of the thriving colonies founded by the Greeks on the southern coast of Italy from the 8th century B.C. on. The traditions, philosophy and art of Magna Grecia had a strong influence on life in these cities, and contributed to the establishment of a lively and flourishing economic and cultural climate. Amongst the more refined forms of art that developed was that of the goldsmith. The diffusion of this art was most evident in Taranto, the main centre of production, where at the beginning of the fourth century elegant workshops sprang up and specialist workers created charming precious jewels: earrings -a favourite ornament of these peoples - in the most extraordinarily daring and complex forms, elaborately decorated with flora and human or animal figurines; ornate necklaces with the protome of a lion, rings with collets, bracelets, crowns and magnificent diadems.
These treasures, and many more, can be seen at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto in the section devoted to the art of the goldsmith in the Hellenistic era (4th-1st century B.C.). Highly successful exhibitions of the gold have been held in Milan, Paris, Hamburg and Tokyo.
