The town was built atop a, rock which drops sharply down to the sea. Little is known about Us origin but legend goes that the town was founded in 970 by Sueripolo, captain of a fleet of Slavonians. Not far from the town stands the abbey of Santa Maria di Galena (XI century) which wos important when Peschici became a detachment of the Rertedectine abbey of the Tremiti Islands. A small area in the old town called Recinto Baronale is the monumental area of the town. Here there is the Medieval castle, the characteristic houses perched on cliffs overlooking the sea, rupestrian houses and the charming church o/San Michele. Along the road towards Rodi (Garganico there is the tower of Monte Pucci built during Spanish rule as defence against pirate incursions.
