Like
most of the other coastal towns, little is known of its origins, except that
it dates back to far-off times. It seems that it was originally a Cretan
colony which was later taken over by a Rhodian colony, as the name Rodi (Rhodes)
suggests. The old sea, town, surrounded by olive and citrus fruit grows, is
now a modem, well equipped resort which has nevertheless retained its
suggestive town center with the white washed dwellings, narrow alleyways and
flights of steps where traces of the
town walls, ruins of the castle belonging to the Marquis of
Cavaniglie, the Byzantine bell tower of San Nicold di Mira, the small
church of Madonna della Libera and the church o/San Pietro can
still be seen.
