The town is located in the south-west of the Gargano at a height of 566 m in a fertile valley ofkarst origin where many prehistoric artefacts have been found. It was founded back in the XI century as a resting place for pilgrims travelling along the via sacra lon-gobardorum to the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo. It seems that Us name comes from the small San Giovanni or Rotonda church which, still stands today. In the XIII century Frederick II fortified it with walls and towers, parts of which can still be seen in the present day town. Nowadays it is famous for the figure of Father Pio da Pietrelcina, venerated for his ascetic life style and the many humanitarian and religious initiatives he promoted including the construction of the modern hospital called Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza and the foundation of the Santa Maria delle Grazie sanctuary built next to the ancient church of the Cappuccini The flow of pilgrims, attracted by the fame of the monk who died in 1968, resulted in the growth of cottage activities and businesses andfadliiies to welcome the pilgrims. In thfi town th&re are various places of worship such as the artistic Via, Crucis by Francesco Messina located on the slopes of Monte Cas-teilana. ike Sant'Onofrio church, the Sant'Orsola church and the Madonnarii Loreto chapel.
