The convent of San Marco in Lamis

 

Located at a height of 550 meters above sea level on the slopes of Monte Nero (1014 m), this is the third highest town of the promontory after San Giovanni Rotondo (566 m) and Monte Sant'Angelo (796 m). Located in the high part, of the Vallone di Stignano karst incision, from where it dominates the Tavoliere below, San Marco in Lamis is in the center of an area of karst phenomena and is on the. via sacra longobardorum road along which pilgrims travelled in Medieval times to reach the shrine of San Michele. The town center, which is built in a comb-like form, lies at the foot of the hill on which the abbey originally dedicated to San Giovanni (VII century) stands. This abbey first belonged to the Benedictines, then to the Cistercians (1311) and finally (1578) to the Franciscans. The Franciscans, who came into possession of a relic of San Matteo, which, soon became the objects of popular deaotion, changed the name of the ancient abbey to San Matteo, maintaining the Benedictine  name in lamis  because of the many marshes (lame) along the banks of river Candelaro. In the shrine there is an interesting Byzantine style olive wood statue of San Matteo (XIVcentury). A second convent named after the Madonna di Stignano was built in the XVI century at the top of the valley to the west of the town.
