The main islands in the group are San Domino (2.08 kmq), San Nicola (0.44 kmq) and Caprara (0.44 kmq) and the main rocks are Cretaccio and La Vecchia. The island of San Domino is the largest and has undergone the most development as regards tourism and construction; it is of an elongated shape and is mainly covered by pine-woods and Mediterranean bush, (buckthorn, strawberry trees, lentiscus etc.).

There are many grottos especially along the southwest coast including Rondinelle, Viole and Sale, (named so because in the past it was a hiding place for salt smugglers) and Bue Marino, the local name for the extinct monk seal. San Nicola, is the most fertile of the islands and is almost totally cultivated; it is the administrative seat of the archipelago and regular ferry services arrive therefrom Termoli, Rodi Garganico, Vieste and Manfredonia.

The center of La Marina houses the local authorities'offices. Along its rugged coastline with the grottos of Madonna and Ferraio, there is only one possible mooring place where a sleep pathway leads up to the town. The Town, defem-ded by walls, nestles around the Castello and the abbey of Santa Maria a Mare.

The abbey, founded by the Benedictines in the XI century when the monastic order began to ftold an important, role in the westernisation of the South, passed under the rule of the Cistercians and then the Laterans of Lucca who transformed the commit into an impregnable fort culminating in the so-called Torrione del Cavaliere.

The church of Santa Maria a Marc, founded in 1045 and re-built in the XV century, has a beautiful portal, sculpted in 1473 by Andrea Alessia and N'icolo di Giovanni Gocari The abbey, which extended its rule to Ahruzso and the land of Bari, reached its greatest power between the 15th and 18th centuries. Under Ferdinand IVthe abbey was disolved and in 1793 it was transformed into a penal colony. the twenty years of Fascism all the islands were used as places of exile for people sent into forced residence for political reasons.

 The island of Caprara or Gapraia, is also called Capperaia because of the abundance of capers. It is uninkabitated and has only a lighthouse located at its highest point.

In ancient times the I'remiti Islands were known as Insulac Diomedeae, because they were linked to the mythical Divmed/ix who it is said was buried here after the Trojan war.

 According to the people who used to live here, the moans tuhwh^an hi; fward on summer nights was the weeping of the companions of the Greek hero. In truth these 'moans, which sound like the crying of newly born babies, can still be heard today but are no more than the calls of shearwaters; birds belonging to the petrel family, whichfind an ideal environment on the Tremiti Wands to build their nests.
