The town, built at the summit of a gently sloping hill, at a height of 445 meters, with the houses built along the natural trend of the ground, is located on the northern edges of the Foresta Umbra. The presence of springs has meant that man has lived here since prehistoric times  yet  unquestionable proof only dates back to the end of the X century when, at the time of Otto III of Saxony, the troops summoned from Oaimatia to fight the Saracen pirates were quartered here.

 

 

 

 

View - Vico del Gargano

The picturesque town is enriched by the ruins of a Castello (XIII century) which farmed part of the defence system solicited by Frederick Ii whm castles were also built at Vwste, Carpino, Apncena and Sannicandro. Just outside the town there is the Convento del CappuceinL famous far the huge holm-oak which, according to the records of the monastery, was planted by a certain Friar Nicola in the early 17th century. In the church, founded in 1566 and re-built after the earthquake in 1646, there is a large 6 section polyptych by Andrea Vaccaro.
