The lawn, built on a rocky promontory ai the eastern end of the Gargano promontory, has an old Medieval part on the rocky Punta San Francesco and a new town built on the coast mar the beaches of San Lorenzo to the north-west and Gasletto to Ike south. Just off the coast in front ofPunta San Felice there is the small island of Santa Crow mth its lighthouse. The first settlement in the area, where Vieste now stands dates back to between the X and VI century B. C. The origins of its name are uncertain; some say it derives from the presence of a temple dedicated to Vesta, others from tiie Roman name Apeneste.  In the XVI and XVII centuries it was sacked many times by Turkish pirates; the most dramatic incursion was that of 1554 when 7,000 inhabitants were deported and several hundred citizens were beheaded on a stone which is still preserved in the old town center. The various look-out towers along the coast and the Castello at the top of the town, built by Frederick II (1240) but re-built together with the surrounding wails in the XVI century as protection against the Turks, bear witness to this sanguinary period. The Cattedrale is particularly interesting and was built in the Pugliese Romanic shape on the site of an old pagan temple. Leaving Vieste by sea you can mil many grottos along the north-eastern coast of the Gargano such as the della Campana, di San Nicola, dell'Abate, dell'Acqua and Salata grottos.
